The biggest trend in technology right now has to be the switch to cloud computing. From Adobe’s controversial launch of the Creative Cloud, to the exponential growth of Amazon Web Services as a cloud hosting provider, the cloud is changing how we interact with computers for both work and play. Thanks to the likes of Facebook, DropBox and the iCloud even the most basic internet user is familiar with the cloud as a storage medium. But what exactly is the cloud?
First, it’s important to recognize that the cloud is not a physical, tangible entity; it’s a concept. Any large group of networked servers working together to share the load of data-processing can be considered as its own ‘cloud’. Each individual cloud can be private or public, or even somewhere in the middle.
Cloud solutions generally meet these five criteria:
- Instant on-demand service, no installation or setup required.
- Accessible from any location with a connection to the network.
- Provider-managed resource pooling, freeing up the client
- Scalable to meet the client’s needs, no matter how great or small
- Quantifiable service, so the client only pays for what they use
So how does this relate to translation? Translation has existed in the cloud for over a decade, predominantly in the form of machine translation engines like FreeTranslation.com and Google Translate. If you use one of the many automated translation plug-ins available for SDL Trados Studio, you’re already translating in the cloud! But this is just the start; SDL have recently launched two new cloud services to help you as a translator, SDL Language Cloud Machine Translation and SDL GroupShare Cloud.
SDL Language Cloud Machine Translation offers smarter, scalable, secure machine translation to the masses. Rather than utilizing a public source, where your translations are added to an unsecured database, you can now have your own engine, specific to your industry and terminology. Whether you translate words in their thousands or in their millions, a personalized cloud-hosted engine is a great (and affordable) advantage for your business, allowing you to complete projects faster and with greater accuracy.
Our newest cloud offering is SDL GroupShare Cloud. Since its launch in 2012, SDL Studio GroupShare has risen to the forefront of collaborative translation tools, offering translation memory, terminology management and machine translation technology combined in a single platform. However, as a server-based solution Studio GroupShare may not have been suitable for every organization. With its transition to being a scalable cloud-based solution, this all changes; now anyone can take advantage of GroupShare’s productivity boosting features, no matter the size of their organization or available technology. All you need is a connection to the internet!
There’s plenty more on the horizon for translation in the cloud over the next few years. Are you ready to make the switch?
